(Beta) Float MCP: Ask Float in ChatGPT or Claude

Note: the quality and speed of responses may vary based on the volume and variety of data in your account. This prompt was used on a development environment that may or may not reflect the makeup of your account.

Do you ever wish you could ask your AI tool questions like “Which of my 20 projects are at risk of going over budget next month?” or “Who’s available across all my locations to cover for Abby while she’s on leave next week?” and get a clear answer in minutes?

Now, with Float MCP, you can.

All you need to do is connect Float to an AI tool that supports MCP, like ChatGPT or Claude, via the MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector—and you can ask Float about your people and projects directly in your AI tool of choice. Write your prompt and get fast, contextual answers about your team’s utilization, scheduling conflicts, capacity, or project performance without spending hours on data analysis.

The value: connect across systems for deeper insights

Float MCP is ideal for time-poor resource managers who need quick answers to common resourcing and availability questions without waiting for reports or digging through isolated spreadsheets.

It can also give Operations and Finance leaders a fast way to understand broader trends in their resourcing data—or even combine it with information from other MCP-enabled systems, such as CRMs, ERPs, or finance tools, for a comprehensive view of your operational performance.

Need ideas? Here’s what you can try asking Float

Here are a few examples of what you can explore with Float MCP.

Team capacity and availability

  • Example prompt: create a list of everyone who is over capacity or on leave this month. Group them by department.

Staffing trends and patterns

  • Example prompt: looking at the past quarter, which teams or departments were consistently over capacity (> 80%)? Summarize by month.

Budget forecasting and risk (Higher complexity prompt)

  • Example prompt: show me all active projects that are at risk of exceeding their total budgeted hours, based on total scheduled hours to date (not just this month). Include both hour- and fee-based budgets, and show % of budget used.

Best practices for working with Float MCP

⚠️ Don’t forget: AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude occasionally return inaccurate information. Treat your results as a helpful guide to inform your decisions, not as a definitive data source.

Like any AI tool you use, the better the prompt, the better the output. Here are a few tips to help you get the best results:

  • Be specific with what you need
  • If your prompt has multiple parts (think steps, sentences), break it up across multiple messages
  • Ask the AI tool to explain its reasoning or calculation

Note that Float MCP is currently read-only, which means it can analyze your information but cannot change it. It reviews data and provides insights, while keeping your systems and data completely safe and unchanged.

Why is Float MCP currently in beta?  MCPs, like Float MCP, are a new and evolving standard whose design, best practices, and technical implementations are still being tested and refined. Developers are exploring how different AI systems can safely, efficiently, and consistently exchange context and data through it. Many connections and contexts are still untested, and AI tool responses may sometimes be unreliable or even entirely made up.

A couple of things of note before setup

Access to Float MCP is only available for AI tools that support MCPs, like ChatGPT and Claude.

Float permissions

  • Only account owners and admins can connect to Float MCP using their Float login.
  • If a manager or member attempts to access it, they will be notified about insufficient permissions.

AI tool requirements

To connect Float MCP to your AI tool of choice, first confirm that the tool supports custom connectors. Below are the basic requirements for popular AI tools:

  • ChatGPT requires a paid account with connector access enabled in Settings
  • Claude requires a paid plan
