Project roles: assign the right role and bill rate when team members wear different hats

Budget accurately when people switch roles
Teams are rarely one-dimensional. Your projects should reflect that.
With project roles, whenever you have a multi-skilled team member acting in a different role than their usual, you can assign them project-specific role and bill rate. That keeps budgets clean, and reporting aligned with the work your team is really doing—all without changing anyone’s primary role.
One person. Multiple roles.

Every team member in Float has a primary role that keeps resource plans simple and consistent. But when someone switches hats for a specific project, you can assign them a per-project role. It overrides their current role and, if selected, bill rates and applies to that project only. Everywhere else, their primary role stays the same.
Ana wears two hats
Ana is a Senior Designer, but she often steps into a brand strategy role. For the marketing website rebrand, she’s contributing at a strategic level. Ana’s main role stays Senior Designer, but on this project, she’s assigned as a Brand Strategist. The Project view shows Ana as a Brand Strategist for this project, and the budget reflects the correct bill rate for that work.
Jordan fills the gap
Jordan’s primary role is Mobile Developer, but they are also skilled in Front-end development. On an upcoming project for GrowthX, capacity is tight, and there are no other Front-end developers available. You assign Jordan as a Front-End Developer on that project only. Bill rates and forecasts now match reality without changing Jordan’s primary role.
Note: with project roles, only the bill rate is adjusted, cost rate stay fixed. This is intentional—a person’s underlying cost to the business stays the same, regardless of the role they perform on a project.
Try it out now on Pro & Enterprise
When estimating or planning work, select Change role next to the person’s name, and choose the role that best reflects what they’ll do on that project. Apply the bill rates you want—of the primary role, of the project-specific role, or adjust it manually at the project or phase level. You’ll see the updated role and rates applied immediately.
The Project roles feature is only available on Pro and Enterprise plans. If you’re on the Starter plan and would like to try it out, let us know at support@float.com and we’ll be happy to enable a free trial for you.

If your team doesn’t stick to one role on every project, now your plans don’t have to either. Assign team members a different role on a specific project so budgets and bill rates reflect the work they’re actually doing, without changing their primary role in Float.
